Lutein and Zeaxanthin Interventions Against Ocular Disease

Lutein, zeaxanthin , and meso-zeaxanthin as the unique three carotenoids of human macula. The lutein and zeacanthin can be get from our common dietary supplement nutrition such as the green vegetable, yellow and organge vegetable and fruit, but the meso-zeaxanthin is rarely getting from dietary foods and it must be getting through the metabolic transformations after taking the carotenoids to be the formed of macula.

Much of studies like epidemiological and many clinical trials such as  AREDS2 make much attention to the three carotenoids ( lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin) strong functional benifits on the ocular health which can get through from the diets supplements daily. But these basic science and clinical research fundamentally recommended for the age-related macular degeneration and other eye diseases interventions against by nutritional are unacceptable by clinicians and researchers.

From the study and researchers from Dr Paul S. Bernstein team which make the study and examine from the chemistry, biophysics and physiolygy of these three carotenoids of yellow pigments that mainly concentrated in the macula lutea through the means of high-affinity binding proteins and specialized transport and metabolic proteins where they play important roles as short-wavelength (blue) light-absorbers and localized, efficient antioxidants in a region at high risk for light-induced oxidative stress. And then they use the clinical evidence which mainly in normal eyes to support their functional effects of these three carotenoids  for their strong action against the ocular disease from infancy to old age.

Although those clinical evidence show from a comprehensive review from each sides of chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics and cinical studies to support the dietary supplement for the three carotenoids can cure the ocular diseases. And further studies in these fields of inquiry should provide evidence-based guidance on nutritional supplementation with lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin throughout a person’s lifetime.
