Effects of epimedium pubescens icariin on proliferation and differentiation of human osteoblasts

Epimedium belong to Epimedium macranthum Morr.et Decne, Epimedium brevicornum Maxim, Epimedium sagittatum Maxim, berberidaceae plant . Also named epimedium gradiflorum morr . Mainly include: flavonoids, glycosides and polysaccharide. Many researches have show the total flavonoids of epimedium have the good control effect to the ovary removal of rats caused by osteoporosis, and promote osteoblast proliferation and differentiation of rats in vitro.

Epimedium is used as an herbal  aphrodisiac because it increases blood flow to the genital area. Referred to as Yin-Yang Huo in China, where it originates,Horny Goat Weed also  lowers  blood  pressure by dilating capillaries  and  blood  vessels  while  slowing the adrenal production that can prevent blood from reaching the genitalia. Epimedium is grown as an ornamental herb in  Asia and the Mediterranean region, and various species are  used for  medicinal  purposes, including Epimedium sagittatum, Epimedium brevicornum, Epimedium wushanense, Epimedium koreanum, and Epimedium pubescens.

In order to get the exact function of epimedium how to control osteoporosis, this study mainly used the icariin ( mainly include the purity of icariin 10%, icariin 20%, icariin 98% and etc)  as the object of study, proliferation and differentiation as the index  to observe the influence of the osteoblast. Human osteoblasts were obtained by inducting human marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) directionally. MTT was used to observe the proliferation and activity of ALP was assayed to observe the differentiation of the third passage human osteoblasts cultured in vitro. The expression of BMP-2 mRNA was checked by RT-PCR. Result: Epimedium pubescens icariine at the dose of 20 μg·mL-1 increased greatly the proliferation and differentiation of human osteoblasts and promoted the expression of BMP-2 mRNA.

Then from this study, we can get epimedium pubescens icariine enhances isgnificantly the proliferation and differentiation of human osteoblasts, which may be mediated by increasing the expression of BMP-2 mRNA.  More Scientific research and development for Effects of epimedium pubescens icariin on proliferation and differentiation of human osteoblasts , please check here
